Figurative Language Example #1

"She watched the cars crawling up Chicken Street, threading through the horde of hawkers and pedestrians, honking at children and donkeys who wouldn't move."

Hosseini uses figurative language here to show how the change in pace this area of Kabul is different from the more traditional area where she lives. He uses phrases like "crawling" and "threading through the horde of hawkers" because it shows the busyness of Chicken Street and how because it's a modern area, everyone works and has places to be.  Hosseini is showing the separation between modern and traditional societies in Afghanistan and how they follow different beliefs about rights and women.
